There are two main types of lung cancer, categorized by the size and appearance of the malignant cells seen by a pathologist under a microscope: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) (adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, large cell carcinoma, other types) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) (limited-disease SCLC and extensive-disease SCLC).
